-4th Sunday after Pentecost-

It is haunting how these words (Isaiah 59:12-15) echo today. The violence in our streets, the exploitation of the vulnerable, the casual disregard for truth…none of it is new. In every age, human beings have tried to build societies while ignoring the spiritual disease festering within: our bent hearts. We convince ourselves we can manage the symptoms with tougher laws, stronger locks, bigger armies while ignoring the root cause.

But the Bible is clear. Iniquity is not out there alone. It is also in here. It is in me. It is in you. It is what happens when we bend away from the One who made us for truth, love, and wholeness. It is what happens when we love ourselves more than our neighbor, our power more than justice, our comfort more than mercy.

This Sunday, as we face the brokenness and iniquity of the world around us, I want us to reflect together on where this iniquity comes from. I believe that recognizing our sin and confessing our weakness is the starting point of true change as we live out the values of Jubilee as new creations. My prayer is that, as we worship together, we will become agents of that change.

-성령강림후 넷째 주일-

이사야 59장 12절에서 15절까지의 말씀이 오늘날에도 여전히 울려 퍼진다는 사실은 우리의 마음을 무겁게 합니다. 거리에서 일어나는 폭력, 약자들을 착취하는 일들, 진리를 가볍게 무시하는 태도…이 모든 것은 새로운 일이 아닙니다. 어느 시대에나 인간은 마음속에 곪아가는 영적인 병을 외면한 채, 스스로 사회를 세우려 해왔습니다. 더 강력한 법과 제재로, 더 큰 군사적 능력이 있으면 문제를 해결할 수 있다고 스스로를 속이면서 말입니다.

하지만 성경은 분명히 말합니다. 죄악은 저 멀리 ‘밖’에만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 죄악은 바로 ‘안’에도 있습니다. 내 안에도 있고, 우리 안에도 있습니다. 죄악은 우리를 진리와 사랑과 온전함으로 지으신 하나님에게서 등을 돌릴 때 생깁니다. 이웃보다 나 자신을 더 사랑할 때, 정의보다 권력을 더 사랑할 때, 긍휼보다 내 편안함을 더 사랑할 때 죄악은 자라납니다.

이번주 우리가 대면하고 있는 죄악된 세상의 모습을 마주하면서 이 죄악이 어디서 왔는지 함께 나누어 보려고 합니다. 새로운 피조물로서 희년의 가치를 세워가기 위해 죄를 인지하고 우리의 연약함을 고백하는 것이 변화의 시작임을 믿습니다. 함께 예배함으로 변화를 이끌어 가길 기도합니다.
