-Trinity Sunday-

Recently, I attended several high school graduation ceremonies. One of the students I consider like a niece, someone I’ve watched grow up since her birth, gave a moving valedictorian speech. She is the daughter of immigrant parents who came to the U.S. for education and eventually settled here. During the ceremony, the principal mentioned that many of the graduates who had served their communities and achieved academic excellence were also children of immigrants.

Every one of those graduates had a story. A family history of struggle, pain, and perseverance going back generations. The world doesn’t change because of the smartest or most successful people. No matter how prestigious their degrees or titles, if they only seek their own benefit and comfort, this world will remain on the path of destruction.

But if they remember the sacrifices and love of their immigrant parents, and live lives that reflect that memory, the lives of service, generosity, and concern for justice, then they can become leaders who truly make a difference in the world. And they must become those kinds of leaders.

In the midst of these turbulent and uncertain times, let us gather in worship, praying that we may speak the truth and establish justice with love.

-삼위일체 주일-

최근에 여러 고등학교 졸업식에 참석했습니다. 그 중 한 학생은 제가 조카처럼 여기는 아이로, 태어날 때부터 지켜봐 온 아이입니다. 그녀는 졸업식에서 감동적인 졸업생 대표 연설을 했습니다. 그녀는 교육을 위해 미국에 왔다가 결국 이곳에 정착한 이민자 부모님의 딸입니다. 졸업식 중 교장 선생님은 지역사회를 위해 봉사하고 학업적으로 뛰어난 성과를 낸 많은 졸업생들이 이민자 가정의 자녀들이라고 언급했습니다.

그 졸업생들 한 명, 한 명에게는 각자의 이야기가 있었습니다. 세대를 거쳐 이어진 가족의 고난과 아픔, 그리고 인내의 역사가 있었습니다. 세상은 가장 똑똑하거나 가장 성공한 사람들에 의해 바뀌지 않습니다. 아무리 명문대 학위나 높은 직함을 가졌더라도, 그들이 오직 자기 이익과 편안함만을 추구한다면, 이 세상은 여전히 파멸의 길을 걸어갈 것입니다.

하지만 그들이 이민자 부모님들의 희생과 사랑을 기억하고, 그 기억을 따라 살아간다면…섬기고, 나누고, 정의를 위해 사는 삶을 산다면…그들은 세상을 진정으로 변화시킬 수 있는 리더가 될 수 있습니다. 그리고 반드시 그런 리더가 되어야 합니다.

지금 흔들리고 불안정한 정세 가운데 진리를 말하며 사랑으로 공의를 세워 나가도록 함께 모여 예배 드리길 기도합니다.
