Santa Clara 교인들의 성원과 기도로, 하명순 권사와 김옥남 권사는 2025년 2월 18일 밤 11:50 PM EVA 중국 항공을 이용하여 Taipei, Taiwan을 경유해 San Francisco를 출발했다. 전쟁에 나가는 용사들처럼 많은 인사를 받고 떠났으나, 과연 잘해낼 수 있을지 의문이 들었다.

비행기를 세 번 갈아타며 이틀이 걸려 Hanoi를 거쳐 라오스 수도 Vientiane에 2월 20일 밤 도착했다. 권혁인 목사님과 초향 사모님은 한국을 경유하여 오셨기에 우리보다 늦게 도착하시고, 일찍 떠나실 예정이었다.

김두식 목사님과 이소라 사모님께서 공항에서 우리를 맞아주셨고, Eastin Hotel까지 안내해 주셨다. 이소라 사모님이 Bay Area에서 모아둔 Pen과 학용품 등이 담긴 두 개의 큰 가방을 전달했다. 호텔은 Mekong 강변에 위치해 태국이 보였으며, 현대적인 시설을 갖춘 곳이었다.

 

2/21/2025 (금요일) 호텔에서의 아침 식사는 과일이 풍성하고 매우 훌륭했다. 이후 김두식 목사님의 선교 센터에 모여 브리핑 및 오리엔테이션을 진행했다. 각자 소개를 마친 후, 김 목사님께서 라오스 선교 이니셔티브(Initiative)에 대해 설명해 주셨다. 이어서 선교 센터와 교회당을 둘러본 후, 점심 식사를 위해 인근 라오스 식당으로 향했다.

라오스 선교팀에는 회계를 맡고 있는 N Yi, 정회원 목사인 Tang, 김 목사님의 보조인 Tham Nong, 그리고 이번 여행을 도와줄 Mr. Chan Thao가 함께했다.

라오스 선교 이니셔티브는(LMI) 연합감리교회 세계 선교부(GBGM)의 일부로, 아시아 태평양 지역 사무소의 지도하에 운영되고 있다. 사역의 핵심은 라오스 감리교회의 성장, 목회자 교육 및 훈련, CHAD(지역 사회 건강 및 농업 개발), 언어 및 직업 센터를 통한 사회 발전 등을 촉진하는 것이다.

 

2/22/2025 (토요일) 이른 아침 6:30 AM, 기차역으로 향해 Luang Prabang의 가정 교회를 방문했다. 기차역과 기차는 중국의 차관으로 건설된 최신식 시설이었으며, 다른 국가와 마찬가지로 30년간 상환해야 하는 조건이었다.

가정 교회는 70세의 완통 목사님이 자신의 집에서 20년간 운영하고 계셨으며, 신도들은 대부분 친척이었다. 2층에서 예배를 드렸으며, 앞마당에 교회를 지을 부지를 마련해 두셨다. 예배당을 짓는 데 $3,000~$4,000이 필요하다고 하셨다. 점심으로 찹쌀 주먹밥과 치킨 수프를 대접받았는데, 찹쌀을 기름에 살짝 볶아 랩에 싸서 손으로 조금씩 떼어 먹는 방식이었다. 매우 고소하고 맛있었다.

그러나 예배당 건축 후, 할아버지 목사님께서 돌아가시면 소유권이 개인에게 이전될 가능성이 있어, 자금을 지원하는 것에 대해 신중한 검토가 필요하다는 의견이 있었다.

저녁에는 Vientiane로 돌아와 대형 한국 음식점에서 저녁을 먹었는데, 맛도 좋고 가격도 저렴했다.

 

2/23/2025 (주일) 2시간 동안 험한 길을 달려 Ta Thong 가정 교회를 방문했다. 도로는 대부분 포장되어 있었으나, 일부는 비포장이어서 주변 나무들이 흙먼지에 덮여 갈색으로 변해 있었다. 하와이에서 Lei를 만드는 꽃과 비슷한 종류의 나무들 이었다. 이 가정 교회는 규모가 크고 깨끗했으며, 목사 후보자가 기타 연주 실력이 뛰어나고 건축 기술이 있어 건물도 훌륭하게 지어졌다. 여성 교인들이 많았지만 부엌이 없었고, 난민촌에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 전통적인 불때기 방식으로 조리하고 있었다. 교회에는 수도 시설과 화장실이 마련되어 있었으나, 수세식이 아니라 물을 부어 내리는 방식이었다.

하명순 권사님께서 여선교회 회장님께 교회를 대표하여 헌금을 전달했다. 교회를 운영하는 주인 아주머니는 여섯 명의 딸을 두고 있었는데, 두 딸이 한국으로 시집가 미용사로 잘 살고 있다고 자랑스럽게 이야기했다.

저녁에는 이소라 사모님께서 자택으로 초대해 맛있는 비빔밥을 대접해 주셨으며, 그녀의 부지런함에 감탄했다. 이후 야시장(Night Market)을 방문하여 몇 가지 선물을 구입했다. 야시장은 규모가 크고, 다양한 물건과 많은 인파로 활기가 넘쳤다. 택시 운전사에 따르면, 라오스에서는 중국산 전기차가 일반 차량 가격의 1/3 수준이어서 구매가 쉽다고 했다.

CHAD (지역 사회 건강 및 농업 개발) 일본 도쿄의 Wesley Center에서 지난 5년간 매년 $50,000을 지원하여 지역 사회 발전에 큰 기여를 해왔다. 그러나 지원이 2025년 3월 만료될 예정이라 염려하고 있었다.

이 프로젝트는 깨끗한 식수 공급, 위생 시설(화장실) 설치, 가축 및 의료 지원, 식량 확보 및 생계 향상을 위한 농업 기반 시설 마련 등 지속 가능한 마을 지원을 목표로 한다. 이는 라오스에 매우 필요한 사업이므로, 이를 위해 기도해야 한다. 조금 전, 김두식 목사님께서 기쁜 소식을 전해 주셨다. 모두의 간절한 기도 덕분에 Wesley Center가 지난 1월 방문 이후 프로젝트를 2027년까지 3년 연장하기로 결정했다.

 

2/24/2025 (월요일) | 산티숙 언어 및 직업 센터 이 센터는 영어 및 직업 훈련 과정을 제공하며, 취약 계층 학생들에게 장학금을 지원하고 있다. 30년간 선교사로 헌신해온 Connie 선교사가 운영하고 있으며, 앞으로의 발전이 기대된다.

공항으로 향하는 발걸음은 무거웠다. 앞으로의 사역을 주님께 맡기며, 라오스를 위해 기도해야겠다는 다짐을 했다. 주님이 원하시는 것은 무엇이며, 우리가 해야 할 일은 무엇일까?

Sora Lee, Missionary started Sunday School을  Bay Area 에서 가지고 가신 학용품으로

Laos Mission Vision Trip

With the support and prayers of Santa Clara church members, Ms. Ha Myung Soon and Deaconess Katherine O Kim departed from San Francisco on February 18, 2025, at 11:50 PM via EVA Air, transiting through Taipei, Taiwan. Though we received many well-wishes as if we were warriors going off to battle, we couldn’t help but wonder if we would be able to accomplish our mission successfully.  

After three flights over two days, we arrived in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, on the night of February 20, via Hanoi. Pastor Kwon Hyuk In and Mrs. Chohyang, who had traveled via Korea, arrived later than us and planned to leave earlier.  

Pastor Kim Doo Sik and Mrs. Lee Sora welcomed us at the airport and guided us to the Eastin Hotel. Mrs. Lee Sora handed over two large bags filled with pens and school supplies collected from the Bay Area. The hotel was situated along the Mekong River, offering a view of Thailand and featuring modern amenities.  

2/21/2025 (Friday)  

Breakfast at the hotel was excellent, with an abundance of fresh fruit. Afterward, we gathered at Pastor Kim Doo Sik’s mission center for a briefing and orientation. Following personal introductions, Pastor Kim explained the Laos Mission Initiative. We then toured the mission center and church before heading to a nearby Lao restaurant for lunch.  

The Laos mission team included N Yi, who managed finances, Rev. Tang, a full member pastor, Tham Nong, Pastor Kim’s assistant, and Mr. Chan Thao, who would be assisting with this trip.  

The Laos Mission Initiative is part of the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) and operates under the guidance of the Asia-Pacific regional office. Its core ministries focus on growing the Lao Methodist Church, training and educating pastors, CHAD (Community Health and Agricultural Development), and social development through language and vocational centers.  

2/22/2025 (Saturday)  

At 6:30 AM, we headed to the train station for a visit to a house church in Luang Prabang. The train station and railway system, financed by a Chinese loan, were newly built with modern facilities, requiring a 30-year repayment plan like in other countries.  

The house church was led by Pastor Wantong, a 70-year-old minister, who had been running it for 20 years from his home. Most congregants were his relatives. Worship was held on the second floor, and a plot of land in the front yard had been designated for a future church building. Pastor Wantong estimated that $3,000–$4,000 would be needed for construction.  

For lunch, we were served sticky rice balls and chicken soup. The sticky rice, lightly stir-fried in oil and wrapped in plastic, was eaten by tearing off small portions with our hands. It was very flavorful and delicious.  

However, there was concern that if the church were built and Pastor Wantong passed away, ownership might transfer to private hands, requiring careful consideration before providing financial support.  

That evening, we returned to Vientiane and had dinner at a large Korean restaurant that offered delicious food at an affordable price.  

2/23/2025 (Sunday)  

We traveled for two hours on rough roads to visit Ta Thong House Church. While most roads were paved, some were still dirt roads, leaving trees covered in brown dust. The area had trees similar to those used for making lei garlands in Hawaii.  

This house church was larger and well-maintained. The pastor-in-training was skilled in guitar and had construction experience, resulting in a beautifully built church. Though there were many female members, the church lacked a kitchen, and meals were prepared using traditional open-fire cooking, commonly seen in refugee camps.  

The church had running water and toilets, though they were not flush toilets but required manual water pouring. Ms. Ha Myung Soon presented an offering to the women’s ministry leader on behalf of the church.  

The church owner, a woman with six daughters, proudly shared that two of them had married Koreans and were working as hairstylists in Korea.  

That evening, Mrs. Lee Sora hosted us at her home and served delicious bibimbap. Her diligence was impressive. Later, we visited the Night Market, where we purchased some souvenirs. The market was large, vibrant, and filled with a variety of items and people.  

A taxi driver mentioned that in Laos, Chinese electric cars were about one-third the price of regular cars, making them an affordable option.  

CHAD (Community Health and Agricultural Development)  

For the past five years, the Wesley Center in Tokyo, Japan, has provided $50,000 annually to support local community development. However, funding is set to expire in March 2025, raising concerns about the program’s sustainability.  

This project focuses on:  

- Clean water supply  

- Sanitation facilities (toilets)  

- Livestock and medical support  

- Food security and livelihood improvement through agricultural infrastructure  

Since this initiative is crucial for Laos, we must pray for continued support.  

Just moments ago, Pastor Kim Doo Sik shared wonderful news—thanks to everyone’s prayers, the Wesley Center decided to extend funding for three more years until 2027 following their visit in January.  

2/24/2025 (Monday) | Santisuk Language and Vocational Center  

This center provides English and vocational training, offering scholarships to underprivileged students. It is run by Missionary Connie, who has dedicated 30 years to missionary work, and its future development looks promising.  

As we headed to the airport, our hearts felt heavy. We committed the future of this mission to the Lord and resolved to pray for Laos. What does the Lord desire? What is our mission moving forward?  

Future Plans  

1. Request assistance from:  

   - Paul Gong (GBGM Asia Office)  

   - Rev. Hea Sun Kim  

   - Scranton Women’s Center in Korea (UMW)  

   - Hikari Chang (Wesley Center in Japan)  

2. Enroll in the GBGM Advance Project and establish a fund for Pastor Kim Doo Sik and Mrs. Lee Sora.  

3. Engage in the Santa Clara UMC Laos Mission Project.  

Mrs. Sora Lee started pilot program of Sunday School with the supplies which she brought from the Bay area. She started March 2025. 3. 18.
