한인 여선교회 주최의 인권 쎄미나를 다녀온 후.

한인 여선교회 인권 세미나가 9/11/23-9/14/23 까지 아트란타 조지아 주에서 열렸다.  27명의 여선교 회원들이 참석 했고,   이번에 주된 성경 말씀은 갈라디아서3:28입니다.

“너희는 유대인이나 헬라 인이나 종이나 자유인이나 남자나 여자나 다 그리스도 안에서 하나이니라.”

몇개의 소 그룹으로 나누어서 미리 공부하고, 배운 것을 나누려고 준비했습니다. 매일 저녁 소구릅의 발표가 있었고; 인종 차별의 현장을 다녀와서, 보고 배운것들을 보고했읍니다.  다녀 온곳으로는; 로자 팍스의 도서관과 박물관, 덱스터 아베뉴의 마틴 루터킹 목사 기념 장로교회, 셀마교회, 에드몬드 페터서 다리, 쎌마에서 몽고메리로 가는 역사적인길들, 그리고 유산(legacy) 박물관 등…

미국의 흑인 역사는 1619년에 시작되었다. 수백만의 아프리카 사람들이 강제로 잡혀서 배에 실려 왔고, 미국에서 노예로 팔려서  참혹한 현실 속에서 살아왔다. 남북 전쟁후에  1877-1950 까지 4천명의 흑인들이 Ku Klux Klan 의 사형(lynching) 으로 죽었다.  그러나  그들은 인권을 위해서 계속 투쟁해왔다. 미국 노예 제도가 아브라함 링컨 대통령에 의해서 1863년에  폐지 되었으나, 인종 차별은 계속 되었다. 흑인들의 경제 사정이 큰 문제이었고, 남부에서는Jim Crow 법이 계속 되어서 ,일 자리를 찾기가 힘들었다.  다만 잡일( Minial job) 만 할수 있었다.

인권 운동은 1955년 몽고메리 알라바마에서 시작 되었다. 로자 팍스 (Rosa parks), 42세 흑인 여성이 뻐스에서 백인에게 자리를 내어 주지않아서 감옥에 감으로 시작 되었다. 그녀는“흑인 운동의 원조 (God mother )라고 불리워 진다.여성들의 정치( Women’s Political Council)  모임이 조직 되었고, Boycott (불매) 은 382일간 계속 되었다,. 사람들은 뻐스를 안타고 걸어 다녔고 Car pool 하거나 흑인이 운영하는 택시를 탓다. 대법원에서 인종 차별은 불법이라고 (Browder v. Gayle) 판정을 내려 Bus Boycott 은끝났다.

마틴 킹 목사님은 Dexter 교회의 목사님이었고, 인권 운동의 원조 이었다. 인권 운동은 전국의 관심사 이었다.  킹 목사님의 지도력 아래 많은 사람들이 평화 운동에 참여했고, 킹 목사님의암살 1968 까지 계속 되었다.  우리는 그의 유명한 연설 “ 나는 꿈이 있다” 를 기억한다. 이 인권 쎄미나 후에 우리가 보아온  흑인 역사, 인권 운동이 바꾸어 보였다. 미국에서 Model Minority Asian(표본이 되는 소수 민족) 으로 써의 우리의 위치는 당연 한것으로 생각해왔다.  우리는 흑인 보다 났다고 생각 해왔다. 린던 존손 대통령이  1964년 인권 법을 통과 시켰다. 그로 인해 한국 사람들이 미국에 올수 있었고, 일 자리도 쉽게 구할수 있었다.  우리는 마지막으로 셀마 페터스 다리를 건느면서, “we shall overcome”  우리는 이긴다 를 불렀다. 흑인들의 투쟁과  희생이 아직도 계속 되고 있다는 것을 생각하면서 ,그들에게 감사했다.

Legacy Museum 에서 딸과 아버지의 마지막 혜어지는 장면을 보며서, 손을 내밀면서 딸은 한없이 눈물을 흘리고, 목에 쇄사슬이 둘르고, 노예로 끌려가는 아버지의  이별의 슬픔을  보면서, 그들의  고통과 슬픔을  같이 느꼈다. 이런 일이 다시는 없어야겠다. 이 세미나 후에 Isabel Wilkinson 이 쓴책 “Caste, the origin of our discontent” 를 읽었다.  그녀의 얘기는 미국의 노예제도, 인도의 케스트제도, 그리고 나치 독일의백인  Aryan Supremacy의 모두가 같은 배경을 가졌고 그 제도를 계속 하고자 하는 사람들에 의해서 지속 되고 있다는것을 얘기 하고 있다.  미국의 인종 문제는 감추어진 Caste System에  의해서 계속 되고 있다.

Human Rights Seminar by Korean United Methodist Women

NNKUMW( National Network of Korean United Methodist Women) held Human Rights Seminar from 9/11/23 to 9/14/2023 in Atlanta, Georgia. 27 Korean UMW members attended.

Our main Bible verse was Galatians 3:28; There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. We divided in advance into a small group; studied the materials and share our knowledge. During the seminar, we visited the racial history sites where the Blacks fought and struggled. We visited Rosa Park Library and museum, Dexter Ave King Memorial Baptist Church, Freedom Rides Museum, Selma Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal church, Edmund Pettus Bridge, Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, and the Legacy Museum.

At the end of the day, each group discussed what they learned and shared their feelings (emotions). Black history in the U.S. started in 1619. Millions of African people were kidnapped and put on ships, sold as slaves to the U.S. where they lived miserable lives. Between 1877 and 1950, About 4,000 people were killed by lynching by Klu Klax Klan. They suffered abuses and massacres, but fought continuously for the human rights. but the situations for the black did not improved due to economic situations. They didn’t have any better way to make a living. Constant abuses and sacrifices, and struggles continued. Civil Rights movement began in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama where Rosa Parks, a 42 years old black woman was arrested for refusing to give up her seat at bus to white person. She was also called the Godmother of the movement. Women’s political committee  organized Bus Boycott. It lasted 382 days. People walked, carpooling and only taking taxis with black drivers. The court ruled it illegal and the bus boycott ended.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was serving Dexter Ave King Memorial church, appointed as the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. Under his leadership many people participated Social concern, and fought Civil Rights Movement until his assassination in 1968. We remember his famous speech of “I have a dream”. After this seminar, our view on black history and movement has changed. We thought our status in the U.S. was because of being model minority Asian, but we owe to blacks for what we have now. President Johnson signed Civil Rights Act in 1964. We benefited from that, so we could come to U.S. as immigrants. As we crossed the Selma Edmund Pettus Bridge singing “We shall overcome” which touched our Hearts. Their sacrifices and stuggles are still continue through voting.

At Legacy museum, a young daughter and father’s farewell was displaced. With the daughter being torn away while crying and chains wrapped around his neck, dragged as a slave. I felt pain and sorrow in their face. What a tragedy!!! 

I read a book ”Cast” The origins of our discontents by Wilkerson, Isabel. She talks about America’s slave system, Cast system in India, and White Aryan supremacy by Hitler’s Nazi, all three systems had similar background and perpetuated by the people who wants to keep the system and continue. “America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden Caste System, a rigid hierarchy of human races, which decided by Race, Class, and other facts” says I. Wilkerson.

금문과 Mary Elizabeth Inn은 San Francisco에 위치해 있고,United Methodist Women (Now United Women in Faith, UWF)가 지원 하는 유일한 선교 기관이다. 금문(Gum Moon), 아시안 지원 Center(Asian Women’a Resoure Center, AWRC) 는 감리교회의 사역이며 지리적, 사회 변화로 적응 하기 어려운 여성과 아동들을 도와주는 기관이다. 그들이 살수있는 곳을 마련해주고, 필요한 기술도 가르치고, 그들의 삶에 도움이 되고 자신 있게 살아 갈수있는 기회를 제공한다. 올해로 금문은 115 주년 창립 기념을 맞았다. 모금 점심 행사는 9/16/23일Far East Café 에서 열렸고, 주제는 “Women Making a Difference “ 변화를 만드는 여성 이었고, 올해의 수상자는 다음과 같다.

*Outstanding Community Service Award—Gerry Wong

*Carol Lee Award—Katherine Kim (김옥남)

올해의 Carol Lee Award 는 나에게 큰 영광이며, 놀랄 만한 (Surprise) 일 이었읍니다. Carol Lee 는 금문에서 살던 사람이고,금문의 도움을 받은 사람입니다. 캐롤 이 를 기념해서 매해 한명의 여성이 선출 되었는데, 제가 올해 당선된것 입니다. Debbie Own (El Camino Real President), 교회 친구, 그리고 가족 들이 이 영광 스러운 자리에 와 주어서 감사했고, 나에게는 행복한 시간 이었읍니다. 그 위에 상항 시장 London Breed, Attorney Brett Jenkins, City Attorney Peter Chiu, And City Administrator Carmen Chu 로 부터 공로 상장을 받았읍니다. 기대 하지도 않은 상을 타면서 내가 해온일들의 중요함을 다시금 느끼고 ,남은 여생을 이런 일들을 계속할수 있기를 기대 해본다. 주님께 감사하고, 이 영광 스런 기회를 마련해 주신, 친구,가족, 그리고 오늘의 영광이 있기까지 도와 주신 여러분께 감사 한다.
