내가 약학을 선택한 이유

아버지는 여성이 독립하기 위해서는 전문 직업을 가져야 한다고 믿으셨습니다. 그분은 약학이 여성에게 좋은 선택이라고 생각하셨습니다 — 의료 분야에서 사람을 돕는 직업이며, 가정을 돌보면서도 파트타임으로 일할 수 있는 직종이기 때문이었습니다.

저는 한국의 최고 대학 중 하나인 서울대학교 입학시험에 합격했지만, 대신 중앙대학교 약학대학에 진학하기로 결정했습니다. 약학대학을 졸업했음에도 불구하고, 오랫동안 서울대학교에 가지 못한 것을 후회하며 살았습니다.

1963년, 약학대학을 졸업한 후 저는 미국 워싱턴주 시애틀에 있는 워싱턴대학교로 유학을 떠났습니다. 학생 시절은 결코 쉽지 않았습니다. 언어 장벽, 경제적 어려움, 그리고 낯선 나라에서 아무도 모르는 외로움에 맞서야 했습니다. 손에는 단 50달러만 들고 미국에 도착했습니다. 수많은 어려움 속에서도 포기하지 않고 끝까지 공부를 마칠 수 있었습니다.

1968년, 저는 캘리포니아주에서 약사 면허를 취득했습니다. 그러나 처음에는 약사로 일하는 것이 쉽지 않았습니다. 의사들이 전화로 처방전을 불러줄 때마다 긴장하고 당황하곤 했습니다. 그해 저는 결혼을 했고, 이후 카이저 퍼머넌트 메디컬 그룹에서 약사로 근무하기 시작했습니다. 그곳에서 36년간 일한 후 은퇴했습니다. 그 기간 동안 감리교회 집사로서 사랑, 정의, 봉사에 헌신하는 역할도 맡았습니다.

이혼 후 싱글맘이 되었을 때, 저는 제 직업에 더욱 깊이 감사했습니다. 약사라는 직업이 경제적 안정을 주었고, 자녀들의 교육을 지원할 수 있게 해주었습니다. 저는 아들과 딸, 두 자녀를 두었으며, 두 사람 모두 사업과 의학 분야에서 성공적인 전문가로 성장했습니다.

이제 저는 아버지의 지혜에 진심으로 감사드립니다. 그분이 저를 약학의 길로 이끌어주신 것은 옳은 선택이었습니다. 비록 그분께 직접 감사의 말을 전할 기회는 없었지만, 이제야 그의 결정이 제 인생을 얼마나 긍정적으로 바꿔놓았는지 깨닫습니다. 때로는 부모님과 어른들의 지혜를 믿어야 합니다 — 그들은 인생을 살아오며 얻은 경험과 통찰을 가지고 있기 때문입니다.

My father believed that women should have a profession to be independent. He thought pharmacy was a good choice for a woman — a helping profession in the medical field, where one could work part-time while taking care of a family.

I passed the entrance exam for one of the best universities in Korea, Seoul National University, but I decided to attend Chung Ang University’s School of Pharmacy instead. Even though I graduated from pharmacy school, for many years I resented not going to Seoul National University.

In 1963, after graduating from pharmacy school, I came to the United States to continue my studies in pharmacy at the University of Washington in Seattle. My student life was not easy. I faced language barriers, financial hardship, and the loneliness of not knowing anyone in a new country. I arrived with only fifty dollars in my hand. Despite many challenges, I persevered and completed my studies at the University of Washington.

In 1968, I became a registered pharmacist in California. However, working as a pharmacist was not easy at first. When doctors called in prescriptions over the phone, I often felt nervous and panicked. That same year, I got married. Later, I began working for Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, where I served as a pharmacist for 36 years before retiring. During that time, I also became a deaconess in the United Methodist Church — another helping role dedicated to love, justice, and service.

When I went through a divorce and became a single mother, I was deeply grateful for my profession. My pharmacist job provided financial stability and allowed me to support my children’s education. I have two children — a son and a daughter — who have grown into successful and accomplished professionals in business and medicine.

Now, I am truly thankful for my father’s wisdom in guiding me toward pharmacy. He was right to choose this profession for me. I never had the chance to thank him, but I realize now how much his decision shaped my life for the better. Sometimes, we need to trust the wisdom of our parents and elders — they have the experience and insight that come from living life.
