El Camino Real District

Kim, Kathy

여선교회 일로는 El Camino Real Dist., Ca/Nevada 연회 여선교회 선교 학교 Assistant Dean (부 교장), 서부 지역(Western Jurisdiction) 에서는 회계(Treasurer), 그리고 여성국의 이사(Women’s Division Board of Director) 2008-2012, Program Advisory Group으로 일했습니다. (2012-2016).

M.S.W (Master in Social Work) 를 공부 했습니다.

2022년에는 Fleece로 500개의 복도리를 만들어서 New York Homeless (200개), New York Refugees(100), Oklahoma Native Indians(100), Arizona Hopi Indians(100)를 보냈다.

My Last Article to ECRD.

Katherine Kim, Deaconess November 25, 2022

Before I say Goodbye to ECRD UWF,

I wanted to say my gratitude for ECRD which provided me the basis of my UMW work, and also share my life and work.  As I became an older adult, I need to reorganize my old life and get ready for the 2nd half of my life.

United Methodist Women played an important role in my life. I am a retired pharmacist, deaconess, and social worker.  I came from South Korea in 1963 (59 years ago) with $50 on my hand, to study pharmacy at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. With minimum English and not knowing anyone in the U.S., my life hasn’t been easy. I just graduated Pharmacy School at the Chung Ang University in Seoul, Korea.

I retired from Kaiser Permanente Medical Group as a pharmacist after 36 years of service In March 2004.  I retired early from Kaiser at 62 due to my illness. I was commissioned for Deaconess at the same year.  Ms. Betty Purkey who is a deaconess, a Deaconess Program officer helped me to become a deaconess.  At that time, Korean UMW was promoting Deaconess as well.  Our graduating class of 2004 had five Korean deaconesses out of 23.

For the work of UMW, I served an Assistant Dean at Ca/Nevada Conference UMW, Western Jurisdiction Core Planning group as a Treasurer, Women’s Division Director from 2008-2012, and Program Advisory Group from 2012-2016.

I also served Korean American Consultative Group for Women’s Division.  Rev. Hea Sun Kim who was an officer of Women’s Division helped me a lot.  She was one of the best mentors I ever had.  While I was serving Women’s Division director, I also served General Conference of UMC until 2018. I served one term as a delegate and two terms of Reserve Delegate from Ca/Nevada Conference UMC. It was an exciting moment when you elect Bishops at the Jurisdiction meeting.

As a Deaconess, we serve love, justice, and service.  I started Senior Ministry at my local church, San Jose Korean UMC of Santa Clara Valley in July 2004. I paid $2,000 for the seed money. About 30 seniors mostly from my local church, met every Wednesday with worship service, exercise, Singing. Arts/Craft, and lunch, etc.  The challenges for the senior ministry were not much support from my local church….  We all enjoyed the program.  I retired after 10.5 years, passed the baton to a capable successor.  She changed the name of Senior program from Senior ministry to Wednesday ministry.  Young people started to come, and I became a regular attending member.

While I was working as a pharmacist at Kaiser Hospital, I went back to school, received B.A. in Psychology, Sociology, and Art at San Jose State University, continued for a master degree of Social Work. I quit school one semester short of graduation for MSW (master in Social Work) for personal reason… divorce.  My two children were at high school, we studied together.  They both are successful business man and woman.  Sadly they are not attending church now.

Even though I am a retired person from UMW, I am still healthy and have plenty of work to do.

I received so much, I want to pay back to the Society. I am a member of Advocacy/Justice committee for Ca/Nevada Annual Conference. I am still involved with local and National Korean American UMW (advisory committee person for National Korean American network). I would like to recruit more young Korean American members. I have been working for Domestic Violence Advocate groups for the victims for over 20 years. I would like to set up a shelter someday.  I am a Real Estate Investor. I do manage my own properties. I am a globe trotter. I do travel a lot, and I went many Ubuntu Journeys with UMW members.  I usually combine mission trips with my traveling.  I just came back from the Danube River Cruise by Viking. I felt alive and enjoyed spending money because dollar was strong about 1:1. The last time I went Europe, Euro was twice more expensive.

The one regret I have is that I failed to recruit Korean UMW to American UMF. Most of them are not comfortable with English (bounded by language difficulty). The person who can do the work, they are too busy or not interested (this is my view from my local church). Another regret is that English is my second language, I am not confident in many ways. At times, I don’t express myself fully, and don’t speak up, and be quiet.

I Thessalonians 5:16 will lead me, Be joyful always. Pray continually; give thanks in all

Circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Thank you.

During the period of Corona Virus, I attended my garden and made mask with clothes, and delivered them as needed.

On 2021, I made scarves with Fleece, and sent them to homeless or wherever needed. Also I made UMCOR Hygiene Kits, and sent them to Baldwin Louisiana UMCOR depot. On 2022, I made over 500 scarves with Fleece, and sent them to Homeless and Refugees from Texas in New York, Oklahoma Native Indians, and Arizona Hopi Indians.

I will continue to do the work as needed.  Thank you.
